My Thoughts On the Latest MLB News
If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile then you know I sometimes like to take little breaks from blogging. I tell myself I’m going to post an entry every few days, but even when something interesting happens I fail to blog about it. Not every time, but at least once a month I can’t seem to motivate myself to post a new entry.
What I’ll usually do (as I’m doing now) is post an entry after the several day break to recap the things that have happened since the last time I blogged. I’m not going to go over everything that’s happened. I’m just going to talk a little bit about the main things on my mind.
Chipper Jones Returns To the Braves’ Lineup
Chipper Jones made his 2012 regular season debut on Tuesday against the Houston Astros. I wasn’t sure what to expect, as he had just gotten over surgery from an injury
he sustained during spring training. I was hoping he’d get at least one hit (which he did) but I never expected him to perform as well as he did. Jones went 2-4 in the game, with one of his hits being a home run. (Number 455 of his career.)
I thought Chipper looked great deffensively as well. During Tuesday’s game Jones made a fantastic bare handed play to throw out the batter at first. He moved fairly swiftly, and didn’t appear as if he was feeling any pain. A great sign for Braves and Chipper fans alike. It didn’t appear to be luck either, as Jones went 2-5 in the very next game. It should be interesting to see how he does in today’s home opener against the Brewers.
Tim Lincecum’s Rough Start To 2012
After a less than stellar 2011, I was fully expecting Tim Lincecum to have a bounce back year, domintating the way he did in past years, but so
far that’s not the case. If anything, Lincecum’s going down hill. Now I’m not saying he can’t, and won’t, turn things around. All I’m saying is that he really needs to hurry up and figure it out. (As a fan of Lincecum, I’m hoping he does.)
Tim Lincecum has made a total of two starts so far this season, and looked overmatched in both. In his latest start on Wednesday, Lincecum lasted only 2.1 innings (the shortest outing of his career) giving up 6 runs off of 8 hits, while striking out three.
Lincecum’s next start is scheduled for Monday against the Phillies. Let’s hope he can finally show us at least a glimpse of the old Tim Lincecum.
Johnny Damon Signs With Cleveland Indians
When I first heard that the Cleveland Indians were looking to sign Johnny Damon I didn’t know what to
think of it. To tell you the truth, I had lost all track of Damon once the 2012 season got underway. I recalled that Damon hadn’t found a team during the offseason, but once spring training ended I thought nothing more of it.
I for one think it’s an interesting move by the Indians. Damon can be a great player (future hall of famer?) but he’s a guy you need to keep a very close eye on. He could go either way.
Johnny Damon agreed to a 1-year, 1.25 million dollar contract with the Cleveland Indians. This makes the seventh team of Damon’s career, and the fourth different team for him in the past four years. I truly hope Damon performs well this season. I look forward to seeing him play again.
Making Up for My Lack of Entries
It’s been awhile since I’ve posted a non Q and A blog entry. (16 days to be exact.) Although there’s been some big news lately, I’ve been slacking when it comes to writing about it. So I apologize for that. I’m going to use this entry to talk about the major news stories that have taken place since the last time I blogged on January 10th. I figured it’d be easier to do that than to do several different blog entries.
YU DARVISH SIGNS WITH RANGERS
After paying 51.7 million (the most for any pitcher in MLB history) for the rights to talk to Yu Darvish, the Rangers were able to lock him up with a 6-year, 60 million dollar deal. That’s good news for the Rangers, if Darvish pans out. However, there’s been more than one instance in the past of
a pitcher that has been dominant in Japan, only to come over the the United States and fail, at the Major League Level. The latest example of this being Daisuke Matsuzaka. The Boston Red Sox (who didn’t even submit a bid for Darvish) paid 51.1 million to talk to Matsuzaka, and ended up getting him to agree to a 6-year, 52 million dollar deal. Although Daisuke had success in his first and second seasons with the Red Sox, injuries since then have caused him to become a non-factor, as he only pitched 6 games this season, with a 5.30 ERA. Not exactly stellar stuff. But if Darvish does turn out to be the same caliber pitcher he was in Japan, he could very well be the extra link needed to finally get the Rangers that World Series title that they’ve been so close to getting the past two seasons.
PRINCE FIELDER SIGNS WITH TIGERS
Since the Brewers where beaten out of the playoffs by the St. Louis Cardinals, all eyes have been on Fielder, with the main question being where he’d end up for the 2012 season. Well, no one knew for a long time. It was reported a few weeks ago that the the Rangers and Nationals were the teams that were pursuing Fielder the hardest. But after the Rangers spent a big chunk of
change to sign Darvish, you had to figure that Fielder was going to be sporting a Nationals jersey in the upcoming season. But know one really knew for sure where he’d go. That’s why, although I was surprised, it wasn’t a huge shock when it was reported that Fielder had signed with the Detroit Tigers. Fielder’s 9-year, 214 million dollar deal makes him the highest annually paid member of the team. But I think this is going to work out well for the Tigers. Although they had to shell out over 200 million to get Fielder to sign, he has shown in the past that he can be a major factor, and I think the addition of Fielder gives the Tigers a great shot at winning 100 or more games this year.
TIM LINCECUM’S ‘FREAK’ISH DEAL
Tim Lincecum is nicknamed the “Freak”, and now I see why. He can get major ammounts of money paid for him, as he was given a 2-year, 40.5 million dollar deal from the Giants, in which he signed. I can’t deny the fact that Lincecum is good–extremely good–but I’m
not sure he’s 20.25 million dollars a year good. When calculated out, Lincecum’s pricey deal comes out to roughly 94,500 dollars an inning–if he has the EXACT same stats of 33 games started, and 217 innings pitched, as he did last year. (This is highly unlikely, but I’m just using it to show how much Lincecum is going to earn the next two seasons.) But the 30,000 dollars per out is well worth it I suppose, if Lincecum can pitch the way he did the years in which he won the Cy Young award. As a matter of fact, Lincecum will earn a bonus if he wins the Cy Young, or any other award. Those bonuses include: CY YOUNG- 500,000 dollars for winning his third one, 250,000 for coming in second, 100,000 for third, 75,000 for fourth, and 50,000 for fifth. NL MVP- 250,000 dollars for winning, 150,000 for second place, 100,000 for third, 75,000 for fourth, and 50,000 for fifth. ALL-STAR GAME- 100,000 dollars if picked to pitch in the game. GOLD GLOVE- 50,000 dollars for winning the award. But all that is pocket change really, compared to what he’ll earn during the regular season.
JORGE POSADA RETIRES FROM MLB
It was first reported back in November that long time Yankee catcher Jorge Posada was considering retirement. That report was confirmed on Tuesday, as Jorge Posada held a press conference to officially announce his retirement from the game of baseball. Posada was part of that core-
four of Rivera, Jeter, Pettitte, and himself, back in the 1990′s. Posada’s retirement makes Jeter and Rivera the last two members of the original four. I admire Posada for his acknowledgement that it was time for him to quit. He went out on top, after 17 great seasons with the Yankees–which is the best thing anyone who retires from any professional sport can do. Better to retire on top, than to extend your career a season or two more and retire after having a season batting average of .151. Now comes the debate of whether or not Posada is a Hall of Fame caliber player. In my opinion he is. Posada had an amazing career that included 1,664 hits, 275 home runs, 1,065 RBI’s, and a batting average of .273. Not to mention his FIVE World Series rings. Not bad for a catcher. I don’t see Posada getting into the Hall of Fame his first year, but I feel that he’ll get in his second or third year on the ballot. He was that good of a player.
TOP 100 PROSPECT LIST
The Top 100 Prospect’s List was released yesterday. While I’m not going to take the time to
talk about ALL 100 players on the list, I am going to give my thought’s on the top 3. The top three prospects on the list included Matt Moore, Bryce Harper, and Mike Trout. I’m shocked that Harper wasn’t number one. Not because I think he is better than Moore, but because everyone else that follows baseball seems to think he is the best prospect to come along in years. I mean, there’s no doubt that Harper is an incredible player, with undeniable power, but when it comes down to it, I think Moore is deserving of that number one spot he recieved. I have a good feeling that all three of the top 3 prospects will have a major impact at the Major League level this year. Which one will have the biggest impact is hard to say.
Top 5 Favorite Players-2011 Update # 6
There’s a lot to talk about this week. It has been a very productive one for my favorite players. So let’s get started:
HEATH BELL
Heath Bell has had three save opportunities since my last entry. He however only converted two out of the three of those opportunities into saves. And last night was a big one for his career. Getting one more save meant passing Trevor Hoffman for the all time Padres consecutive saves leader. But it wasn’t meant to be. With two out in the top of the ninth, Heath got a ground ball to third base. Easy play right? Wrong. The ball was bounced and the first baseman couldn’t snag it. The streak of 41 consecutive saves, was over. But Heath Bell has another milestone coming up that is also exciting. His 100th save. He is currently at 98 saves. So it won’t take him long to reach triple digits. (The Padres are currently 13-19.)
DEREK JETER
Since last Saturday’s entry, Derek has gotten five more hits. This brings his career total to 2,954 hits. Only 46 away from 3,000. (See my milestone tracker on the right side.) Jeter has been a little more consistent lately in his hitting. He has gotten a hit in his last four games played. Maybe he will finally get into a groove, and help to speed along the process of getting him to 3,000 hits. It’s one of those milestones that when you’re in a slump can seem so far away. But when you start to see the ball better, and get hits, can approach fast. (The Yankees are currently 18-12.)
TIM LINCECUM
Tim has had only one start since my last entry. In that one start he accomplished a great deal of things. First of all, he got the win. That’s always important. Second of all he got TWELVE strikeouts, putting him past Christy Mathewson for the most double digit strikeout games in Giants history. His career strikeouts is also very impressive. Tim currently has 964 career strikeouts. So look out in his next few starts for Tim to hit 1,000 strikeouts for his career. (The Giants are currently 16-16.)
ALBERT PUJOLS
Although still not the slugger so far that he was last year, Albert Pujols is starting to increase his batting average. His current average is .264 for the season. His hits have come mostly off of singles, and have been rather consistent lately. Around one every game. Although Albert did have three hits against the Marlins Thursday night. Pujols has a milestone as well that is approaching. 2,000 career hits. He currently has 1,926 career hits. So he’s only 74 hits away. I know that sounds like a lot, but if he starts to hit like the old Albert, it will be here in no time. (The Cardinals are currently 19-14.)
MARIANO RIVERA
Mariano currently has 571 saves for his career. (See my milestone tracker to the right.) This brings him 31 away from passing Trevor Hoffman for the most saves ever. The way Mariano Rivera is pitching lately, it will take something drastic for him to not reach the record. He is just so dominating on the mound, and nine times out of ten, gets the job done. Last nights save was the twelfth of the season for Mo.

Top 5 Favorite Players-2011 Update # 3
I didn’t think I was going to be able to post my regular Saturday entry today. (Storms in the area caused power outages.) But here it is:
HEATH BELL
Heath earned another save last night in Houston. That brings his career total to 94 career saves. Heath is still perfect when it comes to saves versus save opportunities. (3 for 3.) Heath is doing great. (The Padres are currently 6-8.)
DEREK JETER
Derek Jeter currently has 2,938 career hits. This puts him 62 hits away from the 3,000 hit mark. Jeter has gotten 5 hits in his past four games. This is a major improvement for Jeter since the start of the season. Jeter’s average is slowly starting to creep up. With a current average of .240. (The Yankees are currently 8-5.)
TIM LINCECUM
Lincecum’s most recent start wasn’t as impresive as his first two. He game up 3 runs and 6 hits over 5.1 innings. This brings his ERA for the season to 1.86. He has still only given up just 1 home run so far this year. (The Giants are currently 7-6.) Check out this great play Tim made in his last start.
ALBERT PUJOLS
Albert Pujols must of read my entry I wrote about him last Saturday, because he has started to get red hot. He has hit 3 home runs in his last 2 games. His average is currently .241. But I’m sure he’ll get it above .300 soon. (The Cardinals are currently 7-7.)
MARIANO RIVERA
What can I say about Mo? I guess I could sum his pitching this year up in one word…..AWESOME. Mo is 6 for 6 is saves versus save opportunities. He is now up to 565 career saves. Just 37 away from passing Trevor Hoffman for the record.

Top 5 Favorite Players-2011 Update # 2
Now that we are over two weeks into the 2011 baseball season, we are getting a better idea of how well our favorite players are performing. Here is update number 2 for my five favorite players:
HEATH BELL
Since my last update Heath has earned another save making his career total 93 saves. In the two innings he has pitched in this season, he has only allowed one hit. That is extremely good pitching folks. (The Padres are currently 3-2.)
DEREK JETER
Derek Jeter has gotten 4 more hits since my last update. This puts him at 6 hits on the year, and 2,932 for his career. This puts him ever so slightly closer to the 3,000 hit mark, with only 68 needed to do so. Although Jeter seems to be getting at least one hit a game recently, his average is still just .231. However I believe Jeter is going to lock in soon. (The Yankees are currently 4-3. Not including the outcome of today’s, currenly in progress, game against the Redsox.)
TIM LINCECUM
Tim has now allowed 1 earned run in his two starts, putting his ERA at .64. In his second game pitched he allowed just one run on a home run. But only one run allowed isn’t the main story. He struck out 13 Padres batters. That’s not a typo….THIRTEEN. Although he gave up the home run he still got the win. Tim’s record is now 1-1. (The Giants are currently 3-4.)
ALBERT PUJOLS
Albert still hasn’t locked in during his at bats. He is still having trouble getting hits, with his hits to at bats ratio being 5-28; or a .179 batting average, for those of you who don’t excell in math. Pujols has only hit one home run this year, putting his total still at 409 for his career. He better start improving soon, or the Cardinals may be in trouble this season without their best slugger doing just that…slugging. (The Cardinals are currently 2-5.)
MARIANO RIVERA
Mariano Rivera is currently the most dominant closer in baseball. He’s gotten four saves in four attempts. This puts his career saves total at 563 saves. Only 39 saves away from the all time saves record. Rivera looks so great right now. I wouldn’t be surprised if he got the save in every opportunity this season.
OTHER GENERAL BASEBALL NEWS
-
Manny Ramirez has decided to retire from baseball.
-
The Rays and the Red Sox finally got their first wins.
-
The Rangers continue their winning streak and are currently 6-0.
I’m still planning on doing one of these update entries EVERY Saturday of the season. So be sure to check back at LEAST every Saturday………
Top 5 Favorite Players-2011 Update # 1
I realize that only a few games have been played of this 2011 baseball season. But the games that have been played have been exciting. Every few games, I’m going to take a look at the stats of my top 5 favorite players(see the list to the right side). This is progress update number one.
HEATH BELL
He has only pitched in one game, but that one game pitched led him to his first save of the season. This leaves him 8 saves away from 100 lifetime saves. He’s someone to keep an eye on. (The Padres are currently 2-1.)
DEREK JETER
Having only achieved 2 hits in the 3 game series versus the Tigers, his current batting average in .200. But I have confidence that Jeter will turn this slow start around. The two hits he achieved(both being singles) puts his official hit count up to 2,928. Only 72 away from 3,000. A milestone that is well within reach for this season. (The Yankees are currently 2-1.)
TIM LINCECUM
Having also just pitched one game, versus the Dodgers. Tim looks to be off to a strong start. He lasted 7 innings with no ERA. (1 unearned run.) He did however get the loss. With the Giants winning the World Series last season, and with two Cy Young awards under his belt. I expect Lincecum to continue the elite pitching. (The Giants are currently 1-3.)
ALBERT PUJOLS
I don’t think anyone saw Pujols going 2 for 13, to start off the season. Although one of those two hits was a homerun,(putting him at 409 for his career). Pujols is not connecting with the ball all that well. I still believe that Pujols will quickly improve his game. Anything above the .154 average that he currently holds, is an improvement. (The Cardinals are currently 1-2.)
MARIANO RIVERA
Although he is considered to be ancient, in baseball years, at age 41. Rivera is showing no signs of losing his killer cutter, and thus pitching ability. Rivera is 2 for 2, in save opportunities and saves achieved. This leaves him 41 saves away from passing Trevor Hoffman, on the all time saves list. Rivera’s current number of 561, is an amazing accomplishment, that not many closer achieve.
OTHER GENERAL BASBALL NEWS
-
Boston goes 0-3 against the Rangers.
-
Mark Teixeira hits a home run in his first three games.
-
White Sox ground into triple play for first time since 1978.
-
Ian Kinsler and Nelson Cruz become first teamates ever to hit a home run in each of the first three games.
From now until the occuring date, I will have a tab to the right side with an updated road to milestones. (Derek Jeter’s 3,000 hit, and Mariano Rivera’s 602 save.)
